In the wake of the recent security risk announced by Carefirst's The Dental Network, consumers have contacted Better Business Bureau of Greater MD for advice on where to turn to prevent ID Theft. On February 20, 2008, personal data including social security numbers of 75,000 members of Carefirst BlueCross BlueShield's The Dental Network plan were posted on a public Web site. Plan members were notified about the security breach three weeks after the postings initially went up.

'Tis the season for taxes, and Better Business Bureau (BBB) | Greater Maryland urges taxpayers to resist the temptation of refund anticipation loans (RALs) which may just deplete their refunds through excessive fees and interest rates. Companies like Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block advertise their RALs by alluring consumers with a quick loan guaranteed within one to two days of applying for the refund. In actuality, it only takes six to 14 days longer to receive a refund directly from the government.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Greater Maryland is informing consumers of a new Senate law, enacted on January 1, 2008 to help diminish identity theft. For a five dollar fee, Maryland residents now have the option of placing a security freeze on their credit reports. The freeze prevents a credit reporting bureau from releasing information about the individual’s credit history.

Complaints received by Better Business Bureau for fitness clubs have increased more than 90 percent in the last 5 years. And according to a new analysis conducted by BBB, the most common complaints consumers have about fitness clubs focus on two related areas, contract disputes (41.5 percent) and billing issues (31.7 percent). BBB has also seen a rise in complaints about fitness centers that sold memberships, only to go out of business a few weeks later (15.1 percent), leaving disgruntled customers behind trying to recoup their advance payments.
