Better Business Bureau | Greater MD is issuing a consumer alert to warn online car shoppers that scammers have stolen the identity of a legitimate company, Global Payments Inc., in order to offer phony escrow services and defraud consumers out of thousands of dollars. More than 50 victims have lost a total of $200,000 as the result of this single operation.

BBB | Greater MD reminds consumers to be on the alert for "mystery shopper" or "secret shopper" scams. In this scheme, fake checks are sent to consumers with instructions to cash the check at their bank, shop at certain stores and report on their service, then wire a portion of the money back to the "company."

BBB | Greater MD warns local consumers to be aware of rogue movers this spring season. Moving is a tedious task that involves a vast amount of planning. A successful move is an attainable goal; however there are dishonest movers out there that take advantage of consumers who are not fully aware of their rights.

It's that time of year again! BBB | Greater MD reminds consumers to be on the lookout for the official list of unclaimed property in their local newspapers. The Maryland Comptroller issued a list of 66,000 accounts worth over $46 million, in the form of a separate insert that only appears in home-delivered publications. The list first appeared in various newspapers on April 3, 2008 - and will continue to run through April 23, 2008.

In the wake of the recent security risk announced by Carefirst's The Dental Network, consumers have contacted Better Business Bureau of Greater MD for advice on where to turn to prevent ID Theft. On February 20, 2008, personal data including social security numbers of 75,000 members of Carefirst BlueCross BlueShield's The Dental Network plan were posted on a public Web site. Plan members were notified about the security breach three weeks after the postings initially went up.

Better Business Bureau | Greater MD warns consumers of an international scam targeting US car buyers. Scam artists advertise through online classifieds and trade magazines sporting popular cars for prices far less than their Kelley Blue Book value. By the end of the scam, buyers are out thousands.

According to a Better Business Bureau (BBB) analysis, nearly one-third (32.5 percent) of complaints against tax preparation companies allege that the preparer made an error or mistake in the tax return, often requiring the consumer to pay fines or added fees to rectify the problem.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) | Greater Maryland alerts businesses to be on the look out for a scam that is creeping its way across the country. According to complaints filed with Kentucky's BBB, R & K Wholesale and Distribution is sending invoices to car dealerships for DVDs on OSHA safety training. The problem is that the businesses had not ordered or received the DVDs.

Beware! The BBB name continues to be used in "phishing" scams. Fraudulent emails containing malicious links and viruses have been sent to businesses and consumers around the country claiming to contain information on a complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau. None of the BBB's computer and email systems are involved in this hoax. The BBB and authorities are working together to stop these continued attacks.
